I ran Colin's GameDay fielder code after loading RecentGames.bat into my gameday database from BBOS just to see what it did. Then, I loaded AllAvailableGames.bat into my gameday database to get all the BBOS games. When I look in gameday.event_player table ( that Colin's code created), there are only games from the RecentGames load. What do I need to do to have it include all the new games in my database?

Also, how would I retrieve batted ball x,y locations prior to the Pitch F/X GameDay XML data ~2006?

Forum category: Datasets / Gameday XML
Forum thread: Requery the GameDay Fielder code?

could anyone help me parse the pitch sequence strings? i'd like to remove all pickoff throws from the strings, and my best effort was gonna be to use the replace function to delete them essentially, but i was wondering if someone knows a way to pull the characters that represent pitches out of the string and into a new column (is that possible?) any ideas, as always, are greatly appreciated, have an awesome day!

Forum category: Datasets / Retrosheet
Forum thread: using retrosheet to figure total pitches thrown by pitcher

Hello! I was wondering if anyone could suggest some simple ways to get a txt file created using bevent into a database…I used bevent to print the pitch sequence and pitcher for each at bat…I was gonna import it into excel and use the len function to count the length of each pitch sequence (which would give me a list of pitcher and number pitches for each at bat) and then load it into my database and use sqlyog to sum pitches by pitcher id…I guess I am wondering if there is a way to just import the txt as a table into sql, and sum the pitches by pitcher id? Hope I explained my question almost clearly…sorry otherwise!

Forum category: Datasets / Retrosheet
Forum thread: using retrosheet to figure total pitches thrown by pitcher

I probably didn't write that as clearly as I could/should have. Prior to 1996, fielding numbers in the Databank are only listed as OF; after 1995, they're broken down into the three OF positions as well. For those years where we have CF, LF and RF breakdowns, we're uninterested in the OF data, so that was discarded.

Forum category: Databases / MySQL
Forum thread: Quick Question about the Primary Position Table

Try using a CASE statement… it's meant for instances almost exactly like this, where you have a list of possible values and something different to do depending on what the value is…

for example

select playerid, yearid, CASE WHEN pos = 'C' THEN (innings/162) * 12.5 WHEN pos = 'SS' THEN (innings/162) * 7.5 -- etc ELSE 1 -- use 'ELSE' as the catch-all, to be used on anything that wasn't listed above END as POS_ADJUSTMENT from fielding;

there might be a more elegant way to do it with MySQL variables, but using CASE is a little more generic

Forum category: Databases / MySQL
Forum thread: sql for positional adjustments?

What I was wanting to do was to get a listing of all pitchers ERA in year 1 as well as the same pitchers ERA in year 2. What I was wanting to do is have some cutoff (say greater than 150 innings pitched each season) so that I'm only getting pitchers that have pitched 150+ in each season.
I am going to make available the complete RetroSheet data as a single .sql download. We are just finsihing up the testing and will have it so only 1-2 people can download it at a time. I could see a rush once it is up. Since I get the hosting basically for free, I don't want to abuse it. It is at 4.5 GBs. Takes a while to download and extract, but works great.
I was trying to follow the wOBA thread on the BOOK blog. I'm doing this in MySQL so I used the SQL on this page for the primpos table instead of tango's but I think its giving me different results.

For instance in 2006 for RperOut instead of .182 that he gets, im getting .185. I'm wondering if the difference between Colin's table and Tango's for primpos is why there's a difference?

Forum category: Databases / MySQL
Forum thread: Quick Question about the Primary Position Table

Thanks Colin…looked around a bit so now understand what a wiki is. I'm brand new to relational databases so it's going to take me a bit of time to come on board and add anything of value to these discussions…am currently working through the initial 2 articles from StatSpeak and that CONCAT statement has me stumped…not the basic statement on a stand alone basis, but when it's inserted in a longer querry. Have no idea where the author grabed things like "p.playerid" and "m.playerid", etc… Where the heck did the p. and m. come from? (rhetorical…no need to answer…I'll figure it out).

Forum category: General / General Discussion
Forum thread: Initial goals of BaSQL?

The two main goals (that I have, at least) are:

To provide a place for people to ask questions

To provide code samples for people to use and modify.

The pages tagged "snippets" are my current focus - I'm taking a lot of my old code and posting it basically as-is. I'm not saying improvements couldn't be made. Porting some of it to Access wouldn't be the worst idea.

I can host data files, so long as they aren't too large - I think we get 100 MB hosting total, I'll have to check. There are a few things that I've adapted from other sources that I'll see about getting the permission to share here.

And then the big one is to do tutorials for setting up play-by-play data.
First off, thanks to Colin for setting this up. If this wiki gets the attention and detail that it *could*, then this will be a great resource for anyone interested in studying baseball statistics. I'm eager to help however I can.

I was wondering if people wanted to chime in with their ideas on what should be included in BaSQL, and what kind of content and features we hope to see. I know Colin said, in his post on statspeak, that he hopes it will be the "central clearinghouse for information on how to commit sabermetrics using a relational database." There's a lot of room for what can fit under that, though, and I figured it might be good to list some of those thoughts.

Are there thoughts on: what topics need to be addressed first (mysql vs. access vs others? implementing Win Shares/other advanced stats? connecting bdb data with retrosheet data? many others?) ? What features might be nice to implement, if possible (spotlight articles? beginning tutorials? downloadable files? data hosting?) ? How active people might want to communicate with each other (this forum? mailing list? private messages?) ? I'm sure there are other questions I'm forgetting here…

Forum category: General / General Discussion
Forum thread: Initial goals of BaSQL?
